Thanks to @seamount_fishing the new harness has arrived and in a few months we’ll be putting it through its paces. The old one was part of a lot of big fish and I’m sure this one will be too! Plus, it’s so pretty!😍

Hello 👋 to all the new visitors concerned about life jackets, bilge pumps and harnesses! Welcome to giant black marlin fishing on the Ribbon Reefs, Australia🙃

Appreciate the concern (not as much the sarcasm and disdain lol). To answer a couple of the most pressing questions….

Why do we back up?
We are primarily a catch & release fishery and so our aim is to release these fish in the very best condition we can and we use all the tools in our arsenal to do that. Backing up, is just one of those tools. These game boats are built to fish like this. The fish we are catching can be so big you just can’t catch them deadboating!

You’re going to sink the boat!
In Australia, charter boats have to be in ‘survey’ in order to operate. And safety standards are very strict in order for a boat to get into survey. Which means lots of things like water-tight bulkheads. The back decks are also designed for water to get away quickly.

I like to take my photos from the back deck over t

I like to take my photos from the back deck over the bridge (unless it’s too rough/wet) which means a bit of scrambling up and down. My cameras live on the bridge during the day but typically I’ll be upstairs and then rush down after the bite (which I LOVE to watch) to wind in the third or fourth rod as well depending on what type of fishing we are doing (bait = 3, lures = 4) and then go back up to the bridge and grab my camera as soon as I can again after that.

There I will pop the band over the rods as they go in the tower leg and then get myself back downstairs again. Then at the end if it looks like the fish will lay down nicely beside the boat like this one I’ll be back upstairs again in a scramble. I always tell the boys where I am and what I’m doing (as in “hold on I’m going back upstairs!!”) As if they care hahahahah. But if they know I’m upstairs and she comes up to the surface on her side…that’s the shot!!
